HISTORY OF THE COUNCIL FOR EDUCATION IN WORLD CITIZENSHIP IN N.IRELAND

Although the CEWC NI website was set up in 2003, the Council for Education in World Citizenship has been active in N. Ireland since the 1970s.

CEWC was founded in 1939 and pupils from N.Ireland participated in CEWC events in England during the 1950s.

A CEWC NI Regional Council (of serving teachers) was set up in 1976 to run inter-school citizenship conferences. Then, in 1992, funding from the Department of Education NI enabled CEWC to appoint a Field Officer to co-ordinate and promote CEWC activities.

From the 1990s CEWC in NI expanded, offering a broad global citizenship programme to schools including Model United Nations General Assemblies, and Drugs and Alcohol Youth Forums for both Junior and Senior schools students throughout Northern Ireland and Ireland.

CEWC NI achieved separate charitable status from the UK body in 2001 and employed a Director and two Project Officers. The Teachers' Panel continues to advise and assist with the running of the programme of activities. CEWC also works in cooperation with a number of supporting aganeices including the Lisburn YMCA, Smac and Drugwiser.

In 2007, CEWC continues to provide schools with excellent opportunites to engage students in citizenship activities, developing individual Key Skills, and increasing awareness of key local and global issues.
