Friday 22nd September saw the first and final Sitting of the Senior Forum, at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. Over 70 students from the following schools participated: St Joseph's College, Aquinas Grammar, Hunterhouse College, Orangefield High and Grosvenor Grammar. Students engaged in some early morning ice-breakers, and were then treated to an excellent presentation from Neighbourhood Officers from Strandtown, and a Panel Q&A session consisting of Michael McKay (Lisburn YMCA), Fiona Byrne (HR Manager Wine Flair), John Ellis (Drugwiser), chaired by Jane Morrice (Deputy Speaker, N.I. Assembly. Jane also kindly chaired the main Plenary Debate in the Senate Chamber (clerked by Marina McConville, Education Officer, N.I. Assembly), where students debated 5 key motions surrounding drugs and alcohol. Debating was of a very high standard, and Grosvenor Grammar were awarded the Prize Cup for demonstrating particulalry excellent debating skills both in the formal proposing / opposing scenario, and the open-floor debating opportunities. Aquinas and St Joseph's were close contenders also for first place. We would like to thank all schools for making the day a true success, and to Parliament Buildings for so kindly hosting this event. Having already met on Wednesday 31st June at Grosvenor Grammar School for the First Sitting, more than 70 students from six schools, met at Belfast City Hall on Monday 12th of June for the Final Sitting. With the Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor Patrick McCarthy kindly opening proceedings, students engaged in some excellent group workshops looking at tackling issues surrounding drugs and alcohol. Students were then given a lively presentation by two community police officers, and a useful Q&A session also. The main debate (Chaired by Jane Morrice with Mary Smyth-Farr as Clerk) was voted the 'best yet' in any Junior Drugs and Alcohol Youth Forum, and this was down to the excellent input and communication skills from all of our six participating schools. The Award for 'Best Public Speaking School' went to Laurelhill Community College, with Hunterhouse College in second place, and Grosvenor Grammar in third place. Other participating schools were Orangefield High School, St. Joseph's College, and Campbell College. Thanks to all students and teachers for supporting what was a great day!
