The disaster in Asia has shocked and saddened us all. Oxfam has put together online support for teachers that enables young people to explore and understand key issues relating to global catastrophes.

15. UN officials tour countries hit by tsunami disaster

4 January 2005 – As Secretary-General Kofi Annan flew to South Asia to attend a global conference to coordinate aid for countries devastated by last week’s tsunami, United Nations agency heads toured the area to fine-tune responses to the disaster that killed nearly 150,000 people, injured 500,000 more and left up to 5 million lacking basic services.

1 January 2005 – With some 40 countries offering support for the victims of the tsunami disaster, over $2 billion in pledges had already been recorded for the emergency and recovery phase, a senior United Nations relief official said today.

BBC News, Tuesday, 4 January - UK Chancellor Gordon Brown wants the world's richest nations to freeze foreign debt repayments for countries hit by the Asian tsunami disaster. The move would allow countries such as Thailand, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka to focus money on reconstruction.
