'Climate Change - is it my Problem ? '
PRIZE WINNING ENTRIES
The Photographic Competition, 'Climate Change - Is It My Problem?#39; was open to the Year 10 pupils who participated in the CEWC Junior Conference, of the same name, held in Fleming Fulton last June.
The pupils were asked to set out the findings from their study of climate change - both locally and globally - in the form of photographic or PowerPoint presentations. There were two competition categories: Single pupil entry and Group entry.
The Prizegiving took place on 22nd October 2009 at Malone House, Belfast and the winners from
Belfast Royal Academical Institution
Fleming Fulton School
Hunterhouse College
were presented with their prizes. Friends of the Earth also contributed with material for the pupils.
The programme for the Prizegiving Day event included a talk on climate change by a Guest Speaker from the Friends of the Earth. A pupil workshop was then led by the CEWC Teacher Advisory Panel, followed by the Presentation of Prizes.
The prize-winning entries were shown on PowerPoint and these presentations demonstrated the use of effective communication in a photographic format. Pupils produced A3 posters; single-entry Powerpoint presentations; Group presentations and, in one case, a school entry. The use of visual effects, as well as the addition of sound and music, added to the overall impact of the messages the pupils were communicating.
The judges congratulated all the pupils on the high standard of their entries. They showed evidence of the raising of their awareness of the effects of climate change and how they themselves could contribute to lessening these effects while expanding their critical thinking. The pupils enjoyed a buffet lunch while continuing their interaction with the other participants.
This initiative was funded by the Welsh Centre for International Affairs.
