Methodological Approach for the Junior Drugs & Alcohol Youth Forum


  • Outcomes and associated objectives

1. Greater understanding of the negative effects of illicit drugs & alcohol
2. Increased knowledge of Human Rights - Legislation and its relevance to the lives of the pupils
3. Meeting requirements/concepts from the Personal Development and Citizenship Strand
4. Development of Skills:
o Development of Key Skills (ICT, effective communication, working with others)
o Development of self-esteem & self confidence
o Confidence to express own views
o Ability of pupils to make informed decisions on issues relating to illicit drugs & alcohol
5. Cross-community interaction
6. Meeting the objectives from the new curriculum (Personal Development: Personal Understanding, Relations and Family Life)


  • Day One (June): Introduction to drugs & alcohol related problems/confronting the pupils' perceptions. Drugs and School Drug Policy (full day)
    1. Ice-breakers (Drama Activities and Drugs/Alcohol Quiz/ranking activity)
    2. Drugs and Alcohol Youth Forum - Ethos
    3. Talk on Drugs & Alcohol and Health
    4. Reinforcement on Drugs & Alcohol Knowledge - workshop activity
    5. Line Debate on attitudes towards drugs & alcohol
    6. School Policy Talk/Preparation
    7. School Policy Workshop
    8. Preparation for the next sitting

  • Activities between the First and Second Sitting:
    1. Alcohol Trail (computer research in schools)
    2. Choosing Motions
    3. Preparing Speeches for the Debate
    4. Studying debating procedures

  • Day Two (June): School Drug Policy: Debate in the Stormont (the whole day)
    1. Drugs and Human Rights workshop
    2. Consolidation of the ICT exercise
    3. Alcohol trail activity
    4. Plenary Debate - practice
    5. School Drug&Alcohol Policy - Plenary Debate

  • Presentation/Reporting back to a chosen type of audiences - Active Citizenship (initiative in a your own school, 30minutes-1hour -one of the following) -this school / classroom based activity can be carried out in September
    1. School Management Board
    2. School Assembly
    3. Drugs Day in the School
    4. Form Class Presentation
    5. Students' choice
    6. Lobbying the local Council
