Activity IA: Ice Breaker (Facilitator)

Resource: Story Chain activity and consolidation of the preparation for the 'Alcohol Chain' workshop. This will be followed by setting the scene for the next exercise

Skills/Aims: cross-community, cross-academic and social interaction.

10.30 - 11.20

Activity IB: Alcohol Chain (Facilitator)

Resource: worksheets.

Skills: Effective communication, working together, problem solving, giving feedback.

Aims: The students are given a set of questions on reduction of alcohol related violence & consumption, to which they try to find solutions from the viewpoint of the role they represent (first in pairs then in the whole workshop group and finally in front of other groups with a possibly dramatised form of their presentation - an extensive Feedback).

Personal Understanding - investigate the effects on the body of legal drugs - investigate the influence on young people of peer pressure - develop strategies to deal with threats to personal safety - develop preventive strategies in relation to accidents on the road

Democracy and Active Participation - investigate the basic characteristics of democracy - investigate ways to participate in society - investigate a local issue from a range of viewpoints and suggest action that might be taken to improve or resolve the situation

Aims: After reaching consensus two representatives from each group give a feedback on their findings from the previous workshop. The feedback will be facilitated by a specialist in this field.

Practice Debate in the Senate Chamber

Resource: The equipment and environment in the Senate Chamber, Debating Procedures

Skills: Effective communication and receptive skills

Aims: Students will familiarise themselves with the electronic equipment and the surrounding of the Senate Chamber in order to feel more comfortable at the real debate following subsequently. They will also reinforce the debating procedures.

Plenary Debate on effective school drugs policy

Chair Jane Morrice (Women's Coalition)

Resource: Seven motions
Skills: Effective communication, problem solving, giving feedback, debating skills
Aims: In the Senate Chamber students will have a debate. They will address seven motions in relation to the improved school drug policy. Formal debating procedures applied at debate in the Northern Ireland Assembly will be used during this debate.
