Helping people to help themselves while promoting global education
and citizenship skills.' An example of global linking and an attractive way for teachers to implement curriculum requirements for good citizenship skills and global awareness.
UNESCO's Co-action Programme assists small grass-roots projects in the developing world, using funds raised from individuals and groups in the industrialised nations. The initiatives are on a human scale and not many people involved are known outside their own village or town,
but these projects are changing the lives of local people. The aims of the programme are:
· To promote better international understanding
· To help young people understand the interdependence of the developed and the developing nations
· To build a direct bridge between individuals in member states of the United Nations
· To contribute in a modest way to improving lives
· To develop pupils' citizenship skills
UNESCO Co-Action is a very flexible programme, suited to 'whole school' or 'single class' participation. It puts young people here in contact with their peers in the developing countries on a 'person to person' basis, offering a foundation for long-term mutually enriching relationships.
Schools are supported by the Project Officer throughout their participation
in the Programme.
